What Do You Learn On An Open Water Freediving Course?

If you are thinking about signing up for the Open Water Freediving Course, you must first know that you are only able to sign up for this course if you have successfully completed the Foundation Freediver course.

If you are eligible to sign up, questions you may ask are: ‘What is the Open Water Freediver Course?’ and ‘What freediving skills will I learn?’ This article covers everything you need to know!

What is the Open Water Freediver Course?

The Open Water Freediver Course is a one day course which builds on the skills learned on the Foundation Freediver course and forms the second (and final) part of the more comprehensive qualification called the RAID Freediver Course.

The Open Water Freediver course takes place over a single day (usually a Sunday), with all theory, kit, tuition and certification included. The only extra fee is your Vobster Quay entry cost. This fee is paid in advance and can be made at the time of your booking if you wish.

The Open Water Freediver course was developed by internationally recognised course providers RAID and successful completion of this course leads to a qualification to a depth of 20 metres. For safety reasons, the Open Water Freediving course MUST be taken within 12 months of completing the Foundation Freediver Course.

For some, the Foundation Freediver Course will contain all the safety, skills and techniques they need or want and they will achieve their Foundation Freediver Course certification without any obligation or desire to continue further. However, we appreciate many students will wish to increase their freediving skills and techniques and work towards the RAID Freediver certification.

Some students will prefer to do the RAID Freediver course in a single weekend (across a Saturday and Sunday). However, for others it is more practical (or appealing) to start with the foundation course and move on to the open water section at a later date.

What skills will I learn on the Open Water Freediver Course?

When you undertake the Open Water Freediver course, you will be building on the theory safety application, skills and techniques learned on your Foundation Freediver Course. You will continue to have access to all theory materials online through your RAID portal and also from the information, video tutorial library and reminders we provide in the build up to your course. These are all invaluable tools to help with your preparedness for your course and post-course training.

Please remember: It is your responsibility to maintain this knowledge, however if you ever have any queries or concerns before your course you can contact us at any time.

Open Water

The Open Water Freediver course is usually our students favourite! Once our students have the opportunity to test their new freediving skills in an open water enviroment, we see rapid increases in confidence, relaxation and improvement. Many of the skills required for open water are building on freediving skills first practiced during the Foundation Freediver Course with a few extra skills added and the opportunity to test them at greater depths.

Freediving Skills To Master in Open Water

In addition to all the skills you would have already mastered on the Foundation Freediver course you will be taught the following skills on the Openwater Freediver course:

  • Constant Weight and Free Immersion diving to a minimum of ten metres
  • Depth Rescue from shallow water black out from ten metres depth
  • Repeated correct buddying from ten metres depth Correct turn at depth

Once students have completed all elements of the open water freediver course, they are able to enjoy their newfound underwater freedom and start exploring planes, platforms, marine life and anything else that grabs their attention!

Watching how quickly students progress during this course is immensely rewarding, regardless of whether those new freediving skills will be used in or out of the water (many students tell us how much the course also helps them out of the water with relaxation, anxiety, stress and other mental obstacles they face).
