Check out Spearfishing on Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday night feast, the latest episode from the hit Channel 4 TV show and find out how Jimmy Doherty prepared for his spearfishing experience by learning to freedive with Go Freediving’s Emma Farrell.
Why Spearfishing on Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday night feast?
Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty have been friends since childhood and now host a TV show together, which combines celebrity cooking from a cafe on Southend pier, with food stories and activism across the UK.
They like to champion British produce, and show different ways to collect and create food on each show. Spearfishing on Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday night feast is a perfect example of how to sustainably hunt food for the table, which Jimmy then turned into simple, yet delicious fish rolls on the beach.
The idea behind Spearfishing on Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday night feast was that Jimmy went into the woods to create his own wooden pole spear for catching fish. It was a good idea, but even he thought that the only way to catch a fish with one was to bludgeon it over the head with it…
Before the shoot for Spearfishing on Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday night feast however, Jimmy needed to know how to freedive, and this was where Emma Farrell came in.

In July 2016, Jimmy travelled up to Vobster, the lake where Go Freediving teaches most of their courses, in order to learn how to freedive from freediving expert Emma Farrell.
On a blistering sunny day, with the water reaching 24 degrees on the surface, she put him through his paces, teaching him the basic freediving skills, such as correct breathing, duck diving, equalisation, finning, and the safety skills needed to make him safe in the water.
Emma was assisted by Go Freediving club leader, Mark Karasick, and filmed Jimmy’s experiences which you can exclusively watch here!

Filming the episode of Spearfishing on Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday night feast
A few days after teaching Jimmy Doherty to freedive, Emma joined the shoot for Spearfishing on Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday night feast in Swanage to act as a safety diver for Jimmy during the scenes underwater.
The sequence started with Jimmy kayaking across Swanage bay with local bushcraft expert Dan Scott and spearfisher Lee Janes to Old Harry Rocks in order to try and find some fish to spear.
The weather was fantastic but the visibility wasn’t so great, and there were almost no fish to be found! Jimmy did his best with the spear, but with almost no fish and a homemade wooden spear that was too lightweight, he really had it stacked against him.
Luckily Lee managed to bag a bass, and that was what we all came for so it was then back to shore to get changed ready for the cooking sequence of the film.
Spearfishing on Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday night feast turned into lunch
Back on the beach, Jimmy made fish sandwiches with lashings of tartare sauce
which were enjoyed by all!
