When students complete a course with Go Freediving, one of the comments we repeatedly hear is about the quality of training from their freediving instructor. Based on feedback from our previous students we have listed the top 8 qualities our students look for or really like when taking a course with us.
Freediving Instructor – Quality #1: Knowledgeable
There are an increasing number of freediving instructor courses available on the market, some of which can be completed in a day or a weekend, without any prior knowledge of freediving at all. Every Go Freediving freediving instructor has not only completed an extended freediving instructor courses, they have also completed every recreational freediving course level we offer our students before becoming eligible to undertake the course. So as a student you know that their knowledge of the course you are undertaking is thorough on both the theory and practical elements. They will have encountered the obstacles and hurdles you may be facing and they will have solutions to help you overcome them.
Freediving Instructor – Quality #2: Experienced
At Go Freediving, and hand in hand with knowledge, each freediving instructor has a wealth of experience not only as freedivers at every level of the RAID levels of certification, but also in other areas of freediving too – such as marine conservation, international competitions, spearfishing, scuba diving, underwater photography and more. They have tried and tested equipment, kit, water conditions, techniques, training aids and anything else you could imagine in the freediving world, meaning if you need help with something, or have a query, their experience will help you prevent making expensive mistakes and could even help you find quicker ways to progress.
I have learned a lot more about equalisation, the freediving instructors have been really great. They have really helped each one of us individually and it exceeded my expectations.
Freediving Instructor – Quality #3: Safety Conscious
Safety is always something our students say they look for when they are booking their course. Go Freediving is VERY safety conscious and we pride ourselves on our safety record. Not only do we use safe venues for diving, with no tides, currents, waves or boat traffic, but each freediving instructor is chosen because of their strong safety values. Our freediving instructors are experienced enough to know when to encourage a student to challenge their perceived limits or when to work more with a student to encourage comfortable progress. We will never force students to do more than they are ultimately comfortable with doing. We do not see passing the course as the only sign of success. For us, seeing a student redefine their limits and becoming more confident is an equal success to us.
All the freediving instructors are excellent, excellent on safety and David Mellor is my new hero – he is just amazing! All of them are very personable, the location is good, I have just loved everything about it! Paul Hayes
Freediving Instructor – Quality #4: Patient
You’ve been told how to do a particular technique, but just can’t execute it, or you just don’t feel confident enough to attempt a dive – we’ve all been there, and that’s where the support of a patient instructor can make all the difference. Going back to experience, our freediving instructors all faced moments of self doubt at some time during their learning. They understand that we all learn at different paces and that something that works one day, may not work another day. Sometimes just swapping instructors for an hour can be the breakthrough a student needs. Our instructors know each other well and know the strengths of each other too. This is invaluable and allows our instructors to identify the best way to help our students.
I like the fact that all the freediving instructors picked up the bug and just went with it. I like people who are dedicated to what they do – which is obviously what Go Freediving does and it comes across really well to everyone. There is plenty of time, plenty of patience for everybody. Chris Davies
Freediving Instructor – Quality #5: Passionate
Every freediving instructor at Go Freediving is very passionate about freediving! This passion will be evident from the moment you join the course. They have been teaching freediving for years, yet see every course as an opportunity to learn more themselves. This passion is quite infectious! Our instructors have, through own personal choice, adapted elements of their lifestyle, diet and complementary training to maximise their capabilities as freedivers, so are always happy to discuss additional ways for you to enhance your own lifestyle to benefit your freediving too.
The freediving instructors have been very good. They don’t wrap things in cotton wool. They tell you straight away if you have got something wrong which is good!
Freediving Instructor – Quality #6: Approachable
Our freediving instructors LOVE to help! It is part of the reason they were identified as excellent candidates to become instructors. They have a natural urge to want to help you, making them very friendly and approachable, so don’t be afraid to ask them anything!
Freediving Instructors – Quality #7: Fun
We take our freediving courses seriously, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any room for fun! We are not a macho, boot-camp style freediving school. We understand that relaxation plays an important part in the success of freediving. Ensuring our students are comfortable, reassured, safe and relaxed is a priority for us.
Freediving Instructor – Quality #8: Ratios
We have always prided ourselves on the number of instructors we have to students. This was one of the first stipulations we set when we set our business up and we have adhered to it ever since. Our courses mean that there will never be more than four students to one freediving instructor. Wherever possible we can even make it as low as one student per instructor! Now that is impossible to beat!
The freediving instructors were really encouraging me to do what I could do and not worry about what anyone else was doing. It was amazing that the instructors were tailoring the course to suit each one of us. It was so thorough and detailed, whist also being laid back and friendly. Kirstine Davidson

Want to know what this weekend’s students thought of their course with us? Read on!
I did a freediving course because I like the idea of enhancing my ability to hold my breath. It pushes your human capabilities.
I loved scuba diving when I did it and I want to feel free and peaceful underwater. Snorkelling is really fun and I want to be able to stay under longer and I just love nature.
I chose Go Freediving for my course because it is close to where I live and Emma seemed to be a good person to come and learn from.
I have discovered that it is not as scary as it may seem. Also it is a lot more focussed on going deeper than swimming around which is cool. I have been scared of deep water for most of my life but when I get in the water with goggles I am not scared, so it quite nice just pushing it. The freediving instructors have been very good and encouraging. Going to 17m to the boat was really cool!
The benefits of this course are the really good freediving instructors, great location and amazing conditions. I would recommend this course because it is very accessible for a total beginner and also extremely warm, friendly and helpful.
I wanted to do a freediving course as a change from individual medley training and a love of swimming that I could still do even though my body is getting a bit old for medley training. I chose Go Freediving because of the good online material, and Vobster because of the controlled environment. I saw what Go Freediving did on YouTube and everything seemed nice and relaxed, a chilled environment.
I have always been concerned about my equalisation but that hasn’t been much of a problem. The freediving instructors have been really cool, and rotating in small groups has been really helpful. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the buddy part of freediving.
The benefits of the course are the confidence in the freediving instructors, and the small group sizes was really great. The whole weekend was just so enjoyable. I would recommend this course because of this and the chilled vibe and nice people.
My course was a birthday gift and I wanted to learn to freedive because I want to be able to explore without scuba equipment and without having to stay on the surface. I have discovered that I can go a lot deeper than I thought I could. I am just amazed at how deep I can go and how relaxed you become after the first few dives!
The freediving instructors have been great! Everything has been very informative and on point. It is structured whilst also being open – everything has been open to discussion so it is good to get all the insight. It has been very relaxed and the freediving instructors were always happy to answer all our questions. The freefalling was a completely different sensation and amazing!
The benefits of doing this course is that you will be able to explore more, you will learn to be more relaxed underwater and being able to go and do it recreationally.
I would recommend this course, definitely because of the safety. If anyone wants to do it, it would be ridiculous not to do it here!
Ross was interested in freediving. I have done a one day AIDA course and Ross really wanted to do it, so I got the RAID course for his birthday and decided to join him – and I am so glad that I did!
There is so much more to it than I thought – I have done so much more on this course than I did on the AIDA one! I originally wanted to do freediving because I was getting a friend into surfing who was nervous of being held down, so we did a freediving course to get more confident in the water.
I spent quite a lot of time looking for a freediving school and chose Go Freediving because it is a two day course, and I just got a good vibe from the information on the website and it just felt like the best choice.
I have discovered that I have a lot more to learn! I have always felt relaxed in water but I didn’t even know about the freefall and that is just amazing really! It is like another planet, so meditative. I have learned so much more about the theory and the safety and it was so good to do. It was really good to do the theory before the course so we came into it really well armed.
The freediving instructors were really encouraging me to do what I could do and not worry about what anyone else was doing. It was amazing that the instructors were tailoring the course to suit each one of us. It was so thorough and detailed, whist also being laid back and friendly. The atmosphere is very relaxed and everyone gets to work at their own level.
My favourite part of the weekend was just getting to spend so much time in open water and the freefall was amazing. The benefits of doing the course are the relaxation element of it and learning to let go of the urge to breathe. When your brain is telling you one thing, learning to override that I think will benefit you in all aspects of life. Doing something outside in nature is just good.
I would recommend this course because it caters for everyone regardless of what level you are at. It’s fun and you will definitely learn a lot!
I have been snorkelling all my life and after a while I realised I couldn’t equalise. I knew coming into the course that equalisation was going to be hard for me so that was my main reason for doing the course and I want to get better and better at freediving. I found Go Freediving on the internet and picked them because they seemed to be the best.
I have learned a lot more about equalisation, the freediving instructors have been really great. They have really helped each one of us individually and it exceeded my expectations. Just spending so much time in the water has been really good.
The benefits of this course is that it helps you improve on your diving skills and it has great value. I would recommend this course because the freediving instructors are amazing and the location is fantastic as you don’t have to deal with all the elements you get in the sea.
I decided to do a freediving course as it is the first step on the road to becoming a spear fisherman and underwater forager. I had cancer as a young man, and I was just getting into scuba diving, but due to the illness I am no longer allowed to scuba dive. But I am allowed to freedive. I was travelling around Croatia and a spear fisherman took me with him to watch him fishing and he taught me to equalise for the first time and it was just a revelation. I looked into it and I found Go Freediving. I did my research and they looked safe and fully qualified.
I have discovered that I can go much deeper than I thought, and I have learned more about my body and even more about my mind. It’s quite a spiritual thing, it’s the same thing when I do yoga, I can feel the beginning of this meditative state of just letting yourself go and relaxing.
All the freediving instructors are excellent, excellent on safety and David Mellor is my new hero – he is just amazing! All of them are very personable, the location is good, I have just loved everything about it!
I just loved being under the water and love nature, and being underwater inside the plane is badass! The benefits of doing this course is the safety, knowing my body a bit more and it is just a great life skill that everyone should have.
I would recommend this course to anybody, even if they are not into freediving because it transcends that, it is like a personal challenge within you and it is very good for your mental health.
I am going to be diving in Tonga in September and wanted to learn how to stay underwater as long as possible, stay relaxed and enjoy the surroundings. The hope is to be diving with humpback whales. I was recommended to use Go Freediving by a very good friend and colleague, Tim Frost who has done courses with Go Freediving in the past.
Doing the course I have discovered the benefits of relaxation to stay underwater longer. The freediving instructors have been very good. They don’t wrap things in cotton wool. They tell you straight away if you have got something wrong which is good! They have your safety as paramount which is in your best interest.
I have really enjoyed the lack of faff compared to scuba diving which is very nice, and was pleasantly surprised at how accessible it is! I was cautious about this, thinking about the longer breath holds and depth and obviously freediving is something that is seen as very risky. I can see now how it can be more controlled which has been very nice.
If I am with my partner, Anna, I want to make sure we are both safe when we are doing it recreationally. After doing the course I feel more comfortable that we can look after each other and I am more relaxed about it which is good.
The benefits of the course are that it will make you more relaxed in the water and gets you over any concerns you have about how risky freediving can be. It is not something I would have tried by myself without coming on this course first to learn what it is all about.
I would recommend this course because it teaches you the basics of freediving and would be a great stepping stone if you wanted to do more.
I like sea life and want to be able to explore more under the water. We are going to Tonga for our honeymoon to freedive with humpback whales. I want to learn freediving techniques so I can stay underwater longer and see the fish and whales more clearly. The reviews of Go Freediving were really good and it looked like a credible place, which is why I chose them for my freediving course.
I have discovered that freediving is harder than I thought – but that won’t stop me! I will look for a pool near where I live to be able to practice. The freediving instructors have been very good – each has a different style, so have different methods to help you when you get stuck – they are all very helpful!
The benefits of doing the course with Go Freediving is that everything is well organised and you get all the kit you need. I have enjoyed the group of people and the freediving instructors. I really like Vobster quay, it is a really nice place to learn rather than in the sea.
I would recommend the course to anyone who wants to learn to freedive. Learning here is probably the best you will get in the UK!
In January I decided to change a few things in my life, I wanted to lose weight and I have totally changed my diet. My ultimate goal is to go spearfishing in Cornwall in August so I decided to do a freediving course instead of just jumping in the deep end.
I have been looking for about 3 or 4 years at freediving courses and found Go Freediving is local and Emma’s expertise and what she has done just comes across very well in the blogs and everything seemed nice and calm and relaxed.
I have discovered that the biggest thing is just to calm down, relax and enjoy it and that you have got more time than you think.
The professionalism of the freediving instructors is pretty good, and I found the talk that David gave about what he has done quite fascinating!
I like the fact that all the freediving instructors picked up the bug and just went with it. I like people who are dedicated to what they do – which is obviously what Go Freediving does and it comes across really well to everyone. There is plenty of time, plenty of patience for everybody.
Getting the duck dive right was a highlight for me and that feeling of going down. It sort of makes me relax, getting down and having time to still look around.
The benefits of the course are that you get to learn to do it properly and you get to enjoy getting in the water and looking at different things. You are not stuck at the same buoy and same piece of rope going up and down the whole time.
I would recommend the course because of the enjoyment of being in the water and learning to do freediving properly. I think everyone should do it!
