Ellie Simmonds swimming with dolphins is a TV programme following paralympic gold medal swimmer Ellie Simmonds as she prepares to freedive with dolphins for the first time. The show also features Go Freediving’s Emma Farrell as we see her teaching Ellie the freediving skills she will need for her trip.

Ellie Simmonds learns to freedive

In the run up to the London 2012 Olympic games, Emma Farrell worked with cyclists and swimmers using a unique mix of freediving and yoga techniques to help them win medals. Over the last year and a half, Emma has now been working with Ellie Simmonds and other paralympic podium athletes to improve their breathing and performance in the run up to the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.

The 60 minute film ‘Ellie Simmonds Swimming with Dolphins’ follows Ellie as she prepares to live her lifelong dream of swimming with dolphins in the wild. We see her training with Emma on breathing techniques out of the water and freediving techniques in the water at the Manchester Aquatic Centre.

Ellie Simmonds Swimming with Dolphins

Ever since Ellie was a child the image of a dolphin gliding through the water has inspired her own astonishing success in international swimming. For Ellie Simmonds, swimming with dolphins was always her dream. But despite her skill and confidence in the pool, she must overcome a terrible fear of the sea if she is to fulfil this ambition.

After spending time building up her freediving skills and confidence with freediving instructor Emma Farrell, Ellie learns about the surprising array of dolphins around the UK. She then heads to South Africa, where she meets local freediver, Hanli Prinsloo, who takes her up to freedive with dolphins she knows personally in Ponta do Ouro, Mozambique which is renowned as one of the best places in the world to interact with these magical creatures.

In Mozambique she finally overcomes her fear of open water and we see Ellie Simmonds swimming with dolphins and realise her dreams.

It was an amazing experience to make a show like this, meet some fascinating people and get the chance to make a dream that I had since I was a young child, finally come true.”
