Freediving film Ocean Gravity is a mesmerising, almost lunaresque film directed by Guillaume Néry and Julie Gautier, and produced by Bluenery.
The film lasts just under three minutes, but in that short time your senses and perception are challenged by disorientating yet beautiful camera shots as you follow Néry during his journey from tranquil weightlessness and near-invisibility, to gliding across the sea floor and bursting into life… and not forgetting the very satisfying last shot of the film.
The film was shot in the Tiputa pass in Rangiroa, Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia). It was while diving here that Néry found inspiration for the film and from that moment, it became an obsession. He described how he wanted to “…use the huge current during the rising tide to create the visual effect of an orbiting body around a star…”
The image below was a breathtaking shot where Néry, for a moment, became his surroundings and almost disappeared. Can you spot him?
Part of the film’s success is due to the complete absence of all other life forms. There are no marine life in any of the shots. Both Gautier and Néry acknowledged this was going to be a challenge, due to the abundant sea life in the area, but their persistence definitely paid off. It created a visual backdrop that meant Néry’s clothing was the only reminder of whether he was in water or space.
The shot below is an eerie shot as Néry glides, almost ghost-like, across the screen, adding to the haunting atmosphere of the whole film.
And then, this sudden burst of life, accompanied by a swell in the music is the perfect climax for the film (and later became the video inspiration for the song “Runnin’ (Lose It All)” by record producer Naughty Boy, featuring Beyoncé).
